The Water Tower on the Drava in Usnjarska Street received its current form in 1555. It is a late Renaissance fortress that protected the southeastern part of the city walls on the bank of the Drava. Before the Italian fortification builders reinforced the walls of Maribor in the 16th century, two round defensive towers stood on their southern part: the predecessor of the present Jewish Tower and, on the site of the present Water Tower, a round tower called Smodniški.

The water tower (Slovenian: Vodni stolp) is a medieval fortified tower from the late Renaissance which is located directly on the Drava. Built in 1555, the tower has a pentagonal shape and consists of massive stone blocks interspersed with embellishments. The tower was built to protect the south-eastern part of Maribor's city walls.

Before the middle of the 16th century, the southern part of Maribor's city wall was guarded by two circular defense towers, the predecessors of today's Jewish tower and the water tower known as the gunpowder tower (Slovenian: Smodniški stolp). Around 1555 it was decided to extend the city's defenses against Turkish raids to the city port. Italian builders built two bastions on the Drava, a tower in the west> Mariborske Benetke ("Maribor Venice") Wasserturm. <

Low medieval defence tower on the Drava with a bar and café and unique seating on the banks of the Drava. Reasonable prices for us Germans, the freshly squeezed orange juice and homemade lemonade are very tasty. The cappuccino is also recommended.
