The name of the monument "Spomenik NOB" refers to the Narodnoosvobodilni boj (abbreviation NOB). This is the name given to the resistance of the people of Yugoslavia against the occupiers during the Second World War in the years 1941-1945. The leading role in organizing the uprising was played by the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPJ) under the leadership of Josip Broz-Tito.

The bronze monument "Spomenik NOB" is a work by Slavko Tihec from 1975 and is located on Trg svobode square. The monument features engraved with the announcements about the execution of prisoners and insurgents sentenced to death during World War II (667 killed) and the farewell letter of the condemned man Jože Fluks. The people of Maribor call the monument "Kojak" because its figure reminds them of the bald detective played by Telly Savalas from the American TV series.
