In the middle of the main square stands the Marian sign (plague sign), which was erected in 1743 on the site of the older plague sign from 1681. It was made by Jožef Straub on behalf of the citizens of Maribor as a thank you for the end of the plague in the city.

The Plague Column is a monument in the main square of the city of Maribor in northeastern Slovenia, erected by "pious citizens" in gratitude for the end of a plague epidemic in 1680 that had afflicted a third of the city's population. The original monument was built in 1681.
