It is one of the largest medieval castles. The first mentions date back to the tenth century. A remarkable, very well renovated castle complex - actually a must for visitors to Querfurt.

Visible from all directions, Querfurt Castle towers over the city. This medieval fortification is one of the best preserved castle complexes in Europe. The famous Thuringian Wartburg would fit seven times within the 3.5 hectare area. Querfurt Castle is the largest castle complex in central Germany. Traces of different historical epochs from the Romanesque to the Gothic to the Baroque have been preserved here and make this complex nationally important for medieval building research. The Romanesque castle church, the mighty west gate and the three castle towers are particularly noteworthy. The grave tomb of the noble Lord Gebhard XIV is of art-historical value, and its realistic design is unparalleled. In the castle museum, the history of the castle, its builders and everyday life at that time are presented in a modern and vivid exhibition.
