The chapel was founded around 1864 to commemorate a tragic accident in which Eduard Reinquin was run over by a cart wheel and lost his life. His brother had the chapel built. The street where the chapel is located is a former Roman highway and runs as an extension of the H. Geesthofstraat to the Boskouterstraat. It is located at the highest point of Kerkom, 93 m above sea level.
This chapel is popularly called 'Piekes kapelleke', after the surname of the former owner Petrus, Pieke, Reinquin of the nearby farm.
The story goes that the first statue in the chapel was accidentally excavated in the surrounding fields (or in nearby woods) in 1854 or 1862, and could therefore possibly come from the Cistercian nunnery that once existed there (early 13° century). The current statue is a statue of Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel and was damaged by vandalism several years ago. In 1972, the chapel was destroyed by a fallen tree during a storm and was rebuilt in 1974 by Jef Niclaes and embellished in 2002. On the facade wall are his initials JN, at the top 1864 and at the bottom 1974. The following text is cut into the wooden beam: OUR LADY OF THE BOSKANT. Thanks to the people of Kerkom, the chapel and statue have been completely restored. Many people still walk to this chapel and a novena candle burns continuously. Prayers are held in May, and the annual pilgrimage takes place on August 15. Source: kerknet.be/pastorale-zone-sjalom-boutersem/artikelen/kapelletjes-kerkom

Descending path follows afterwards, with a beautiful view over the Hageland...
