Best Hikes to St. Peter and Paul City Church (Herder Church) Weimar

Tips

  • City Church of St. Peter and Paul (Herder Church)
City church rich in works of art
Together with the Herder House and Garden and the neighboring Old Gymnasium, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Classical Weimar". The origins of the City Church of St. Peter and Paul go back to the time when the city was founded. A separate parish was formed for the urban settlement, which was established around the middle of the 13th century. Martin Luther preached here at the time of the Reformation. The church got its current interior appearance after the Second World War, in which it was badly damaged.
It was re-consecrated in 1953. Thomas Mann also donated to the reconstruction - the prize money from the Goethe Prize, which he was awarded in Weimar in 1949. The church is richly decorated with works of art. In addition to the Cranach altar and the Luther triptych, there are numerous bronze and stone gravestones of members of the royal family.

  • This church in Weimar was dedicated to the two saints Peter and Paul (Peter and Paul), also known as the "prince of the apostles". Their common feast day in the calendar of saints is June 29th.
    * Simon, nicknamed Peter (Rock), was a fisherman on Lake Genesareth when he - together with his brother Andrew - was called by Jesus Christ to be a "fisher of men". According to Catholic understanding, he is the highest apostle, and the two thousand year long line of popes - currently Francis - are his successors. In statues and paintings, Peter is almost always depicted with two keys in his hand; this attribute refers to the Bible verse in Matthew: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (Chapter 16, Verse 19).
    * Paul was initially an opponent of the Christian movement and was not called to the apostleship of Jesus Christ during his lifetime like the other apostles, but was only converted later with the famous "Damascus experience". His attribute is the sword with which he was executed. According to the Roman law of the time, such a sentence was a "privilege" (quick death and not, like other types of execution, associated with a long, painful death struggle) that was available to the citizens of Rome.

  • Many only know this church under the name "Herderkirche". In fact, that's not so bad, because Johann Gottfried Herder works here and was buried on site after his death in 1803. The three-winged altarpiece, which was started by Cranach and finished by his son, is worth seeing.
