"The Günter Grass House was opened as a forum for literature and visual arts in 2002 at Glockengießerstraße 21 in Lübeck, where the name giver has been living close to the Hanseatic city since 1986. The Secretariat of the Nobel Prize for Literature is located in the same building in Lübeck's old town is therefore the ideal place to present his work in a modern museum architecture.
The focus of the museum is the research and teaching of the interaction of literature and visual art in the work of Günter Grass, who worked not only as a writer, but also as a graphic designer, painter and sculptor. The Günter Grass House works scientifically independently. For interdisciplinary research, the museum has a collection of more than 1,200 original drawings, lithographs, watercolors and etchings as well as numerous manuscripts. Günter Grass wrote literary history in his novel »The Tin Drum«. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for his complete works. The Günter Grass House presents the life and work of this versatile artist. Until his death in 2015, the writer, graphic designer and sculptor in the historic building in Lübeck's old town and went out, in which he maintained his office for years. Today, authentic experience meets interactive media in a unique exhibition.In a lovingly decorated grocery store, visitors can explore the world of the writer's most famous novel character. Between eels, potatoes and effervescent powders, the story of the small tin drummer Oskar Matzerath comes alive, who closely observes the social changes of the time of National Socialism and comments on them with a loud drumming and a bright scream.
