Engelsgrube Alleyways, Lübeck

Some parts of Lübeck are characterized by "corridors", including the Engelsgrube. Corridors are narrow passageways between the town houses and lead to the courtyards behind, where the employees often lived in "booths".

The approximately 320 meter long Engelsgrube is located in the northwestern part of the old town island, in the Marien-Magdalenen Quartier. It starts at the Breite Straße opposite the Jakobikirche and runs west down to the Trave. About half way it is crossed by the merging from the north Engelswisch and coming from the south Schwönekenquerstraße, and just before the end of the road also flows from the south even the Great Kiesau, before then the Engelsgrube opposite the swing bridge on the Untertrave.The Engelsgrube 1259 is mentioned for the first time in a document with the Latin names Fossa Angelica and Platea Anglica (England Street). The name referred to the part of the harbor to which the road led, as it was there where merchant ships used to trade with England by long-distance trade.
