The St. Nikolaikirche stands in the heart of the city of Potsdam on the Old Market directly opposite the new parliament building in the outer shape of the city palace. As the Protestant main church of the state capital of Potsdam, St. Nikolai has since the re-inauguration in 1981 become an important spiritual and social meeting place.

“Construction work on the new church began in 1830 under the local direction of Schinkel's student Ludwig Persius. Bricks from Königs Wusterhausen and building sand from Flottstelle near Caputh were delivered for the substructure.
