The historic waterfront promenade on the Weser is known as Schlachte. In the official sense, the Schlachte is a road running parallel to the shore, which begins at the corner of Erste Schlachtpforte (near the St. Martini Church) and ends about 660 meters further north-west at the youth hostel Bremen (Haus der Jugend), corner of Kalkstraße. The Schlachte, originally Bremen's harbor square, has now become a gastronomic and beer garden mile.
