On the Hildegardisfelsen, visitors can enjoy a unique view of the Limburg Basin and the northern foothills of the Taunus. The rock is of magmatic origin: the high level of volcanic activity in the Westerwald region once caused the lava, which was between 900 and 1200°C, to penetrate to the earth's surface. There the viscous mass cooled to basalt rock and took on the characteristic dark gray to black colour. The Hildegardisfelsen is a geotope in the National Geopark Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus.
