The Long Hermann was built as a tall and slender watchtower between 1360 and 1370. It was expanded in the 16th century to its current height of 45.6 m. Its spire is 95 m above sea level. According to medieval tradition, the sturdy tower was called "Hermann."
The tower consists of ten floors and an observation deck. A steep stone staircase with 215 steps leads to it.

Pikk (The Tall) Hermann is one of 4 former medieval corner towers of the castle on Toompea.

Day 4. A zig zag 250km drive from Saaremaa Island to Haapsalu castle first on the NW Estonian coastline and then onwards to Tallin. The historic centre of Tallin is UNESCO rated and justifiably so. Toompea castle and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral are simply stunning as is the rest of the town. The weather was a nice spring like 22c today too so everything looked great.

Tall Hermann is the defensive tower at the southwest corner of the castle on Toompea Hill, which was probably built in 1371. The tower acquired its current height (45.6 m) and shape at the end of the 15th century.
Good to know: The flag is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. An exception is June 23 and 24, when Victory Day and St. John's Day are celebrated in Estonia.
