clay gate
Tallinn city gateIt is located in the eastern part of the clay road (Estonian: Viru tänav) on the east side of Reval's old town. Immediately to the west of the clay gate, the Old Clay Road (Vana-Viru tänav) from the north and the Wall Road (Valli tänav) from the south flow into the Clay Road.A first mention as a clay gate dates back to 1362. The name goes back to clay pits in this area in front of the city wall at that time. In 1454 the gate system received a front gate. Between the main and front gates was a fortified watermill that was in use until the 19th century. After the gate lost its military function, the five-storey main tower was demolished in 1843. In 1888 the actual gate was demolished. The side towers of the front gate, designed as round towers, have been preserved.
