The inauguration as an embassy residence took place on May 25, 1994 by the German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel in the presence of the Estonian President Lennart Meri.

The house at Lossi plats 7 was owned by Baltic German noble families during the 18th and 19th centuries. The last noble owner, Helmuth von Lilienfeld, sold the property to the young Estonian state in 1921. In 1994, the house was ceremoniously opened.
