The Epping Lines were a fortified defensive line that stretched from Weißenstein near Pforzheim via Mühlacker, Sternenfels, Eppingen to Neckargemünd. It had a total length of 86 kilometers. The defense line was built by forced labor between 1695 and 1697 under Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden, also known as “Türkenlouis”, in order to prevent French raids in the War of the Palatinate Succession (1688–1697).
Chartaques (watchtowers) have been recreated at the following locations: near Niefern-Öschelbronn, near Schönenberg on the Sauberg and near Eppingen. All are a nice destination for cycling tours.

    Hiking

The impressive and large Chartaque watchtower is located near the hiking parking lot. It's well worth climbing the steps to enjoy the view from the top. It's a fantastic project, built here by students between 1981 and 1983.
