Lank Rigg is an outlier on the western edge of the Lake District. From the Irish Sea at St Bees or Whitehaven, it’s one of the first prominent fells on the skyline and, conversely, Lank Rigg is a superb spot for gazing out towards the coast and beyond, towards the Isle of Man.

Routes to Lank Rigg often take in the neighbouring Wainwrights of Grike and Crag Fell too, linking via the unlisted summit of Whoap. Ennerdale Bridge is the usual starting point, and the village has plenty of accommodation due to its position on Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk.

Unlike neighbouring Grike and Crag Fell, Lank Rigg is not a great viewpoint for Ennerdale Water, being too far set back. However, it is a fine summit for surveying the character of the Western Fells, as their ridges stretch away, getting ever higher and shapelier towards the centre of Lakeland.

Tips

  • As Adv Nic said, most people come to Lank Rigg from the NE. However I came in from the West parking on the Ennerdale to Calder mountain road. There are a few places there to park but not many. It is a good place to start from to take in the three Western Wainwrights of Grike, Crag Fell and Lank Rigg. Mind you I did it on a horrid day and saw nothing for the 2nd day in a row!

  • Lank Rigg is a fell in the Western Lake District National Park. It is 1,775 feet (541 m) high. There is a trig pillar on the summit and views over to the coast and surrounding western fells. Lank Rigg is most commonly hiked from the north east, this is the only path that's shown on the map. Many link this fell to Crag Fell and Grike, creating a nice circular.
