February 5, 2025

The East Highland Way was created with the aim of linking up the West Highland Way and the Spey Way. This largely low-level route gives you a unique chance to experience the contrast between the Western Highlands and the Cairngorms.

This is a challenging route in terms of distance, elevation and terrain but absolutely worth it for a feeling of true solitude in the hills. Watch out for the Chalamain Gap boulder field.

The Cairngorm plateau is a rolling arctic wilderness, known for its rounded summits. This route takes in the national park's name sake as well as Ben Macdui, the UK's second tallest mountain. Make sure to stop at the Cairngorm Mountain Resort cafe for an open fire and macaroni cheese pies at the end.

February 5, 2025

The Caledonian Pinewoods are some of the UK's only remaining 'wild' forest and home to a huge array of very rare wildlife. This loop from Kingussie allows you to explore them while also ticking off Marilyn Creag Bheag.

This loop first follows the Aviemore Orbital Walk then picks up the River Spey. The Spey is Scotland's fastest flowing river and offers great views of the distant mountains.

February 5, 2025

I ran the West Highland Way over three days a few years ago with some friends. My backpack chafed horrendously and it rained non-stop but it's still one of the trips we laugh about the most. It's popularity makes it a very social trail with views to match. Make sure you keep an eye out for the well stocked honesty boxes.

February 5, 2025

A bucket-list summit for many, this loop allows you to tackle the UK's tallest peak via a slightly more interesting route. The CMD Arête is exposed though, so make sure you're equipped for it.
