Jost wrote the Palatinate song during his time in Bad Dürkheim (1867–1870) next to the tower of the medieval Limburg monastery ruins above the spa town. A stone pyramid with a plaque commemorates the event. According to his own admission, Jost received the inspiration for this while standing “on the mountain's summit” and looking “in sweet peace” into the plain. From its creation until the first third of the 20th century, the song was very popular in the Palatinate because it serves the stereotypes of Palatinate cosiness and a sense of home.
