The New Reformed Church, popularly called Sophienkirche after the street on which it stands, was consecrated on March 26, 1858.

The New Church is an old, historic church in the heart of the Luisenviertel. It was given the name "New Church" at the time it was built, when it was in fact new compared to the "Old Reformed Church" on Kirchplatz in Elberfeld. The name “New Church” has been preserved to this day, and we as a Protestant parish understand the naming of our church as a program: As a church and parish to become “new” again and again in the sense that the word of God is always new in itself The changing world is to be spoken into and accompanies and changes us humans.

The New Church stands in the heart of the so-called Luisenviertel, also known as the “old town” of Elberfeld. In the middle of the 19th century, however, this was the “new town”, planned and implemented due to the enormous increase in population due to industrialization. The Luisenviertel is a quarter that was created on the drawing board, with straight and parallel streets, starting at Laurentiusplatz (the Königsplatz then realized in the 19th century) and ending at Deweerth'schen Garten, which at the beginning of the 19th century was still completely bleached was embedded.

The plans for this new church came from the Cologne cathedral builder Zwirner, who also designed the reformed church in Ronsdorf. The total construction costs, including the interior fittings (organ, bells, other furnishings) were estimated at 98,600 thalers, from which 110,200 thalers were raised by the time the construction was completed, most of which were raised through voluntary donations from the Reformed community members. The house of the church master of the Reformed community at the time the New Church was built is still on Laurentiusplatz today. The first service took place in the New Church on March 26, 1858.
