This largest and oldest park in Darmstadt originated in the 16th century through the merging of three larger and several smaller gardens. In 1766, Landgravine Karoline commissioned its transformation into an English landscape garden. Grand Duke Ludwig I opened the Herrngarten to the public in 1811, and it has been a popular destination ever since. The Prince George Garden at the northeastern end is also well worth a visit.
