The central memorial for Darmstadt's war dead is the Kapellplatz with the ruins of the destroyed town chapel. Since the "night of the fire", only the outer walls of the neo-Gothic church in the cemetery on the Kapellplatz, which was established in 1564, remain standing. A granite cross about seven meters high was erected in the middle of the church.
