Visitors to Buxtehude are immediately struck by the central harbor basin. It was created when the town was founded at the end of the 13th century and, along with St. Petri Church, is the town's most important historical monument. Archaeological findings and soil investigations in the immediate vicinity have shown that even back then, an island of alluvial sand was excavated to create the canal.

The canal system is considered the oldest artificial harbor within a city in Northern Europe and still largely resembles its original design from over 700 years ago. Renovation work in the 1980s has resulted in the canals being slightly narrower. However, their significance for the town's history and its development into a prosperous trading town during the Middle Ages and the early modern period remains evident. A visit is highly recommended and quite interesting 👍🏼.
