"The creation of the city garden goes back to a private initiative by the citizens of Essen in 1864, who founded the "Essen non-profit corporation" to finance the "city garden". In 1881 the city garden came into municipal ownership and is therefore Essen's oldest public park.Initially located at the gates of the city, after multiple expansions it is now the largest green area in the city center. In addition to spacious lawns, a pond with a fountain and two play areas are special attractions."
