The memorial steles for Christel Wehage, Eckhard Wehage and Lutz Schmidt are located at the southern end of the Rudow-Altglienicke landscape park. The two memorial plaques are dedicated to the victims of the Wall who died in the immediate vicinity:

Lutz Schmidt, born on July 8, 1962, shot on February 12, 1987

Christel Wehage, born on December 15, 1946

Eckhard Wehage, born on July 8, 1948

committed suicide together after a failed plane hijacking on March 10, 1970

The story of the Wehage couple is particularly tragic: for years the couple tried in vain to find a place to work and live together. When no solution was found, they decided to flee. On March 10, 1970 the couple boarded a plane from the GDR airline Interflug in Schönefeld, bound for Leipzig. Shortly after takeoff, Eckhard Wehage demanded at gunpoint that the plane be flown to Hanover. When there was no response from the cockpit, he shot at the door lock until it gave way. But instead of being in the cockpit, he found himself standing in front of another door that would not open.
While the stewardess persuaded the desperate couple to land in Berlin-Tempelhof due to an alleged lack of fuel, the crew was able to turn around for the return flight, but headed for Schönefeld. When Christel and Eckhard Wehage realized that their escape attempt had failed, they took their own lives with two shots.
