The forest area of the Königsheide is ideal for walks, hikers, runners and cyclists. It is a drinking water protection area.
Even as a child and teenager, I was often out and about on foot, by bike and tobogganing.

The Königsheide is a remnant of the wooded area between the neighboring city of Berlin, Kölln, and Köpenick, which the Kölln family was allowed to use as a supplier of firewood. In 1709 the Köllnische Heide came into the possession of Berlin. A large part of the forest area was later added. All that remains are the Königsheide between Baumschulenweg and Johannisthal, Treptower Park, Plänterwald and a small forest area of the same name between Adlershof and Oberspree.
The A. S. Makarenko children's home was opened on the edge of the Königsheide in 1953 and was only closed in 1998. In the meantime, the building has been converted into a residential complex, but its outward appearance has been preserved.
