The historic Elmsteiner Wappenschmiede is the only water-powered Schied in the Palatinate that has been preserved to this day. Tools were made in the smithy for forestry workers, for stone crushers, as well as for masons and farmers. The age of the mill is unknown, the first mention of the smithy was in the 18th century, but probably it is much older.

“The functional Elmstein coat of arms forge is one of the last 3 hydroelectric hammer mills in Rhineland-Palatinate. As a combination of forge and sawmill, the technical cultural monument is even unique in Germany. - Tools and iron implements for forestry, agriculture and housekeeping as well as for handicrafts were manufactured. The founding of the smithy is assumed to be around 1790 - before that there was only a mill on the left side of the mill canal." - Source (quoted verbatim): information board on site
