The Papenburg House was completed in 1648 and cost the Drost 3,000 guilders.Papenburg is Germany's oldest and longest fen colony. Canals characterize the cityscape of Papenburg at both the upper and lower ends and were the main development axes for a long time. The network of canals stretches from the harbor on the Ems River to the Küstenkanal in the southeast, with a total length of approximately 40 km and a longitudinal extension of approximately 14 km.The canals were originally built to drain the moor so that the peat could be extracted and used as fuel or sold. Soon, the canals were discovered as efficient transport routes, which led to the emergence of dozens of wooden shipyards that built barges. The town hall is easily accessible directly on the main canal. The new town hall is currently being built directly behind it.
