Built in 1709, it is the oldest mill in the Emsland. And not only that: it is also the only functioning post mill in the region. You can turn them on the foundation at the perfect angle to the wind direction and you can see them in action regularly. You can also visit them from the inside, by telephone request: 04961-4358.

Intact post mills are rather rare. So it is fortunate that in 1965 the city acquired this post mill from Niederlangen near Lathen, built in 1709, and set it up at this point on the Wiek.
With the mill you will find two special features here:
      1. It is the oldest post windmill in Emsland.
      2. the Papenburg post windmill is the only remaining post windmill in the district.
Unlike the gallery Dutchmen who are often to be found here in the north-west, who use technical sophistication to turn the blades in and out of the wind via the mill head, this mill, as the name already suggests, is operated entirely via the "block" on which the Mill saddles, positioned manually.
The post mill is one of the "must sees" in Papenburg and can easily be integrated into a city tour. In addition to this we find two more mills in the city of Papenburg: The gallery Dutchman "Meyers Mühle"
      (komoot.de/highlight/810266)
on the main canal, which has been perfectly restored with its outbuildings in a prominent position and is definitely worth a visit, and the incompletely preserved mill in Nenndorf.

The post-windmill on the Wiek is the only one of six windmills that once shaped the city area of Papenburg that is still completely intact.

The mill is characterized by two special features: It is the oldest mill in the Emsland region and the only one of this type that is turned into the wind with its complete mill body on a pedestal - the trestle.
