This walk picked up where I left off in May, continuing the England Coast Path from West Wittering after completing the Selsey to West Wittering section earlier this year.
A short bus journey from Chichester soon had me at West Wittering, ready to begin what turned out to be one of my favourite hikes of the year. From the very start, the scenery was outstanding, with sandy beaches, coastal paths, woodland, open farmland, quiet country lanes and the peaceful towpath of the Chichester Canal all packed into one walk.
Highlights included the beautiful stretch along West Wittering Beach, the stunning views across Chichester Harbour towards West Itchenor and the peaceful final miles beside the Chichester Canal. Chichester Harbour is one of the largest natural harbours in the UK and is designated a National Landscape, making it a haven for wildlife and one of the country's most scenic coastal walks. The Chichester Canal, opened in 1822, was originally built to connect the city with the sea and today provides a wonderfully tranquil route into the heart of Chichester.
Despite passing plenty of tempting pubs along the way, I saved my reward until the end with a well-earned pint in Chichester.
This was the first day of a two-day adventure around Chichester Harbour. Tomorrow's walk from Bosham to Chichester would retrace a short section of today's route before exploring the opposite side of the harbour. Looking back, this has to be one of the best hikes I've completed this year.
