Ride along the Vistula River on rental bike

A lovely route. Today was sunny but very windy, and I struggled a few times moving along on the heavy, 3 gear bike. As well the solid basket on the handlebars would often catch the wind and push the bike to the side. But it was still a nice ride and good to get out.

Krakow walking tour: Kazimierz and the Jewish Ghetto

A walk around Kazimierz and the Jewish Ghetto. Kazimierz is the old Jewish quarter, which was cleared of Jews in 1940. However both Jewish and non-Jewish life has returned. Starting at the old Synagogue, I pass multiple active synagogues, intermixed with housing, restaurants and bars. Crossing the river via an impressive pedestrian and cycle bridge leads to the Ghetto, where the Jews deemed economically relevant were sent. The rest has a worse fate at the camps. Ghetto Heroes square has 33 memorial chairs of iron and bronze to represent the tradegy of the Polish Jews. There is a remaining part of the wall that held the Jews inside the ghetto. A number of buildings have plaques indicating how the building was used in the ghetto, and also the fate of the inhabitants during the 1943 ghetto clearance. Next I visited the factory of Oscar Schindler who saved many Jews from Krakow and other towns by employing them and bribing officials to not send those employees to the camps. I ended at the Jewish New Cemetery, which is not that new, and contains many historic graves. Sobering for sure, but lovely to see the number of people visiting the active synagogues that is modern Jewish Krakow.

River Shuttle

The hike began at New Eltham Station, where the first stretch felt quite built up and suburban. But once we joined the River Shuttle, the route quickly became greener, quieter, and far more scenic than expected. One of the early highlights was passing Charlton Athletic Training Ground, before reaching the lovely open spaces of Avery Hill Park. The standout here was definitely the Winter Garden, which was one of the best parts of the whole walk aside from the river itself. Set beside the old Avery Hill estate, it has a really peaceful and slightly hidden feel, with ornamental planting and a lot of character. From there, the walk became even more enjoyable as we followed the River Shuttle through plenty of green spaces and peaceful riverside paths. We also took a small detour to see the confluence of the River Shuttle and the River Cray, which was a nice extra stop along the way. Near Bexley, we joined a section of the London LOOP, which added a nice long distance trail feel to the route. Our lunch stop was briefly interrupted by a sudden hailstorm, which definitely added a bit of drama to the day, but thankfully it did not last long. We finished the walk at The Albany Pub near Albany Park Station, which was the perfect way to end an excellent hike with friends.

River Shuttle

Following the River Shuttle from Eltham to Bromley. A very suburban route with occasional highlights, such as Avery Hill Winter Garden, Bexley Woods, and Hall Place. A variable Spring day, sometimes sunny, and one hail storm right as we stopped for lunch. Walked this with the group which made it more interesting.
