Tikal was a Mayan city, active from 1st century until the 9th century. It was eventually completely abandoned in the 11th century. Overgrown by jungle, and rediscovered in the late 1800s, a restoration project has been underway since the 1950s to uncover the site. It is now a UNSECO heritage site.

A mostly flat walk, with some boggy sections. Primarily follows the path of the Hogsmill River from Ewell until it empties out into the Thames at Kingston. Nice church to see in Old Maldon called St. John the Baptist, with bits having medieval origin (though much of the church is newer).

Section 6 through some nice greenery, including Mayfield Lavender Field (not in bloom this time of year) and onto Oak Park. Oak Park was the home of Lord Derby, who already have a horse race named after his house. Lord Derby and Lord Banbury were deciding what to call their new race they were sponsoring

Hike up Monkey Mountain. There are multiple stories regarding the name, but it is not because there are any monkeys on the mountain. Strenuous hike, especially the second mile up to the top, with steep gradients and scrambling over rocks at the summit. Beautiful views from the top of the sea and the jungle. The raccoon like creatures are coatimundi, in the same family as raccoons, but they are out and about during the day.

At first, the beach seems quiet in the dark Then you see the life. Joggers with headlamps, a sea bird flies away, beach restaurants and vendors setting up for the day, dog walkers, people waking from a sleep on the beach, those just admiring the waves. In town, it is starting to wake. A few cafes and shops serve the early risers, church goers gather ready for the Sunday sermon, market vendors setting up their wares, students shuffle nervously at the surf school as the instructor pulls out the boards. Sayulita morning.

Flat walk following the Hogsmill River. Most paths hard-pack so, but there are some bits that are still dirt so muddy when the weather has been wet.

Oak Park was the home of Lord Derby, who already have a horse race named after his house. Lord Derby and Lord Banbury were deciding what to call their new race they were sponsoring at Epsom Downs. They flipped a coin, and Derby won. Which is why Kentucky has a Derby, and why football announcers in England don't say, "Today is the Manchester Banbury, with City taking on United."

Set off from Richmond Station, up Richmond Hill and into the park. Then around the 7.35 mile Tamsin Trail, which does a rough loop of the Park. Saw some deer, climbed Broomfield Hill (I called it Doomfield Hill as it is my nemesis when running or cycling it), and lots of colour on the trees that hadn't lost their leaves yet. Back out the same gate, and back down to Richmond Station.
