Dartford to Woolwich via. Thames Path

A long and contrasting walk from Dartford to Woolwich, starting straight from Dartford Station and immediately joining the Darent Valley Path. The opening section between the station and Dartford Creek felt very much like edgeland walking, with a few awkward obstacles and a disappointing amount of fly tipping, especially near one of the path entrances. Once past the Dartford Creek Barrier, though, the route became noticeably more scenic, with the river, marshy edges and open space giving the walk a much stronger sense of place, even if the hum of motorcycle engines was never too far away. Following the lower stretch of the Darent Valley Path gave the route a strong sense of tracing the river toward the Thames, before briefly joining part of London LOOP Section 1 and then linking up with the Thames Path. From there, the walk opened out into broader estuary scenery, with flood defences, industrial riverside landscapes and wide views along this more exposed and atmospheric stretch of the Thames. The section near Crossness was rather smelly, though that was partly avoidable, and I was also quite surprised to pass another hiker from my hiking group doing a very similar walk in the opposite direction. Not the most consistently scenic route, but an interesting one for anyone who enjoys rivers, edgelands and London’s changing outer landscapes.

Running into you on this walk was a pleasant surprise! Originally I was planning on starting this walk at Woolwich, but I wanted to get the dreary Dartford section out of the way. Otherwise, we might have probably seen one another at Woolwich.
