Crucifix (HWN 3)

Highlight • Monument

The inner-German border was located at the crucifix (550 m above sea level) and was therefore not accessible. The cross had to give way to the border fence and was rebuilt in 1990. Today a nice rest area with a shelter on the former patrol path.

A beautiful place steeped in history! A small information board on the well-kept white dam house gives interesting information.
On the Saxony-Anhalt side, various rocky outcrops and stones invite you to take a break with a very nice view of the lake and the wall.

Scharfenstein Rest Hut (HWN 002)

First-hand information in the middle of the national park. - Opening hours: daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Arrival and accessibility:
The Scharfenstein ranger station cannot be reached by car.

Coming from Ilsenburg, you hike along the wild and romantic Ilse, following the Heinrich-Heine-Weg over Sand- and Tiefenbachtal and finally reach our two log cabins at the foot of the Scharfenstein cliff.

From Bad Harzburg, you go via the national park forest restaurant "Molkenhaus", crossing the Eckertal dam, past the Frankenbergstein up to the rest hut and ranger station at Scharfenstein.

The ranger station is currently not wheelchair accessible.

Bremen hut (HWN 006)

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Our shelters in the Harz National Park are usually located in places worth seeing and are therefore popular hiking destinations. They serve as a short-term rest and break option and as protection in the event of bad weather. Overnight stays are only permitted in an emergency. In the interest of everyone, whether human or animal, our shelters must be kept clean.

Ferdinand's Stone

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Ferdinand stone is reminiscent of the last free-living wolf, which was killed by Count Ferdinand to Stolberg-Wernigerode and is located on Schindelstieg above Ilsenburg.

Plessenburg Inn (HWN 7)

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Fantastic hike through the Ilsetal in the footsteps of Heinrich Heine. The food at the Waldgasthof Plessenburg was delicious and filling (plessenburg.de/). In a small but fine hut, we were lovingly cared for by a young landlady with cocoa and coffee. In the National Park House Ilsetal we were then surprised by a climbing wild cat.

Incidentally, the Bavarian Wolpertinger is called “Rasselbock” in the Harz Mountains.

Ilsestein Rest Stop (HWN 030)

Nice restoration right on the Ilsestein. From Ilsestein you have a magnificent view and can then look after yourself in the small and fine restaurant.
