Girgel Cave

Interesting rock formation (granite). A small path leads to the top of the cavernous rocks (wooden staircase / ladder) - worthwhile. In the summer months: beware of ticks ...

Napoleon's Hat

Highlight • Natural Monument

This stone got its name long ago from its shape, which resembles a two-masted storm hat or, more precisely, the hat of Napoleon Bonaparte.

The Vorderer Ringberg is 771 meters above sea level. Several imposing rocks lie on top of each other there. A nice photo opportunity.

The "bench" is located directly on a rock. Here, you can find peace and solitude. Unfortunately, the view is quite overgrown.

July 20, 2025,Nagler See, Hohe Matze, Girgelhöhle und noch mehr
Today, things got serious in the Upper Franconian part of the Fichtel Mountains, and I was wearing barefoot shoes for the first time. It worked out great, though.

In the sweltering 30°C (86°F) heat, the frozen water bladder in my backpack was a source of refreshment until the very end. 👍🏼
To finish off, we went to the pub and …

An eventful tour to the Hohe Matze. Starting point of the Nagler See.
Always uphill through pleasantly shady forest.
The ascent to the Hohe Matze is steep, very rocky, interspersed with many roots and blocked in places with trees.
At the top you will be compensated with a great view of the Kösseine and a nice rest area at the …

This route is also suitable for dogs. Mine didn't come up, but I wasn't alone, so I was able to enjoy the fantastic views from both the Prinzenfels and the Hohe Matze. Surefootedness is absolutely essential for the second half of the route; the surface was loose gravel, and I slipped a bit here and there. I highly recommend it!

Finally Fichtelgebirge again 👍. The last time I was there was before Komoot and Corona times. Fantastic round away from mass tourism (Ochsenkopf, Schneeberg, Felsenlabyrinth) 🤪. I think this is the quietest corner in the entire Fichtelgebirge 😉. Finally, coffee and cake at the Nagler See, perfect hike and a treat 👌.

The village of Nagel belonged to Bavaria around 1800, but the border with Prussia ran right on the northern edge of the …
