View of Bonifacio

Highlight • Viewpoint

The path leads steadily uphill, up to the upper town of Bonifacio. When you reach the old town, situated on a narrow headland, you will be impressed by the almost unmanageable, picturesque alleyway that leads to the main tourist attraction of Bonifacio, the medieval citadel. It makes up most of the Upper Town to the west and is one of the most imposing and mighty fortresses in the Mediterranean region.

From the western part of the Berlin Wall the visitor gets an especially impressive overview of the size of the facility. The massive, huge structure with its fortified walls and towers is almost completely preserved and perched for centuries on the rocky plateau high above the sea. Large parts of the citadel are accessible to visitors and allow, especially from the top fortification wall, stunning views over the harbor and the steeply sloping limestone cliffs. Here begins the spectacular staircase of the King of Aragon, which leads over 187 steps in the adventurous 45-degree angle, on the steep cliff face down to the sea. Even today, the Citadel of Bonifacio can be accessed via the only access to the 19th century, the Genoese Gate.

Bonifacio is a port town on the southern tip of the French Mediterranean island of Corsica (Corse-du-Sud) with about 3000 inhabitants, which gave its name to the Strait of Bonifacio - between Corsica and the island of Sardinia, 12 kilometers away , The town is divided into two areas: the Ville Haute (Upper Town) called medieval old town and the marina in the harbor area. The port of Bonifacio, with the limestone plateau in the south and the old town, is probably one of the most impressive in the Mediterranean. The panorama, which offers itself from the many vantage points, illustrates why Bonifacio was always driven as a refuge from the unpredictable weather and ocean currents in the Strait of Bonifacio. The unique location made the city again and again the center of armed conflict, which is why it has been developed over time into a fortress. Viewpoints reveal the sandstone cliffs built into houses, into which the sea has dug deeper and deeper over the centuries so that caves have formed. These are best seen from the sea, from where the so-called staircase of the King of Aragon can be admired, whose steps carved into the stone lead from the upper town to the sea.

Old mills of Bonifacio

Highlight • Other

On the heights of Bonifacio, protected by the ramparts of the citadel, we can still find the old silo and the city's flour mills. The silo is a ruined tower located in the Saint-François district, at a place called "Bois du Cavu". This is where the Bonifacians stored grain before grinding it in the nearby windmill. It is believed that this building was also used as a fodder store. The latter fell victim to a fire in 1899. If the silo is completely destroyed, the windmill is in a good state of preservation.

Be sure to walk to the top. On the right there is a view of the narrow harbor entrance and the important lighthouse Phare de la Madonetta.
On the left you have a wonderful view of the cliffs of Bonifacio.

Entrance to the Port of Bonifacio

Highlight • Viewpoint

The entrance to Bonifacio Harbour offers an unforgettable glimpse of one of Corsica’s most spectacular coastal landscapes. You’ll see the cliffs that frame the harbour, overlooking the turquoise waters and creating a breathtaking backdrop. The rugged limestone formations, shaped by centuries of erosion, add to the region’s impressive geological views.

We really liked Bonifacio! The parking was expensive (15€/5h) but the city walk and nice view were beautiful. The fortress and the stairs were combined 6,50€. We had lunch and were done with Bonifacio after 5h, even drove to Bastia the same day.
The hike took place on planned and random paths, as so often ...

The King of Aragon staircase, an unusual and unmissable site in Bonifacio, is the pride of the inhabitants of Bonifacio.
According to legend, this vertiginous staircase above the Mediterranean Sea was dug by human hands in one night by the troops of the King of Aragon in 1420, during the siege of Bonifacio.
It is also said that it was …

Bonifacio, on a peninsula at the southern tip of Corsica, has a natural, well-protected harbor in a fjord-like bay, framed by the lower town with tall houses. The citadel sits on steep limestone cliffs and protects the walled old town. Tall tower-like houses support each other. The streets are narrow, dark and shady, e.g. Partly steep, access is only possible …

Before we say goodbye to Corsica and cross over to Sardinia, there is one more highlight to visit. The citadel in Bonifacio. Located at the southern tip of the island, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking panorama. Fantastic views and a flair that is difficult to describe will captivate you immediately. As always, there is no time.
