St. Sebastian's Cathedral, Magdeburg

Highlight • Religious Site

As the Catholic Bishop's Church of Magdeburg, the Cathedral of Saint Sebastian has been the spiritual center of the Magdeburg diocese since 1994. However, its history goes back further, because in 1015 the Archbishop of Magdeburg at the time, Gero, laid the foundation stone of the first Sebastianskirche.
The collegiate church at that time was so severely damaged by fires in 1188 and 1207 that a new building became necessary in the 14th and 15th centuries, respectively, which helped St. Sebastian to its current form as a Gothic hall church. The time of the Thirty Years' War also left its mark on this church, which subsequently fell into ruin and lost its cloister, among other things. Towards the end of the 17th century, St. Sebastian was poorly prepared so that services could be held there again. In 1811, however, the monastery, which had become Protestant during the Reformation, was finally dissolved. The Napoleonic occupation troops then used the church as a warehouse, forge and workshop. When more and more Catholic Christians from the Catholic areas of Prussia moved to Magdeburg in the 19th century, a suitable church for this growing community was sought. After several years as guests in St. Katharinen and the Liebfrauenkloster, the Sebastianskirche, which in the meantime functioned as a wool magazine, was finally bought by the city of Magdeburg in 1873 and restored. After extensive restoration and conversion measures, the first Holy Mass after the Reformation was celebrated here in 1878. See kathedralpfarrei-sebastian.de/index.php/kathedrale

Magdeburg Sculpture Park

Highlight • Monument

The complex is located in the vicinity of the monastery of Our Lady. The sculpture park was created in 1989 at the same time that the National Collection of Small Sculptures of the GDR, managed by the museum, was renamed the National Collection of Plastics of the GDR. While one was initially limited to the immediate vicinity of the monastery, sculptures are now also found in the area north of the Hundertwasserhaus, on the banks of the Elbe, in the area of the Elbe train station up to the Magdeburg lift bridge and in the undeveloped area north of the monastery complex. The sculptures shown in the park have been continuously supplemented by further works since 1989, so that contemporary art is represented in all its diversity. A total of around 40 works by different artists will be shown.

Roland Statue, Magdeburg

Highlight • Monument

The Roland of Magdeburg is a medieval statue on the Old Market Square in Magdeburg.
The figure depicts the knight Roland, who was considered a symbol of city rights and freedom in the Middle Ages. Many cities in Europe erected such Roland statues when they had received certain rights from the emperor.
The Magdeburg Roland stands directly in front of the town hall and serves as a reminder that the city had special rights and self-governance early on. Today, it is an important historical landmark of the city.

Magdeburg Horseman (Golden Copy)

Highlight • Monument

This new version of the deer column has stood next to the old town hall since 2012. There is evidence of a similar statue at this point from the 15th century. There are of course a number of legends about the deer with the golden chain.

The monastery complex, which is one of the most important Romanesque plants in Germany, is also one of the most important sights in Magdeburg. Today used as an art museum and concert hall, the monastery was founded around 1015. However, the current building is a bit younger - the work began in 1063/64.

Magdeburg Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

As the oldest Gothic building on German soil, the Magdeburg Cathedral, built in 1207, is not only important in terms of architectural history. Standing free on the cathedral square, the landmark of the city is a truly imposing building. If you approach the 104-meter high building while looking up in the direction of the towers with your head up, it can lead to slight vertigo attacks. :-) But not only the cathedral is worth a visit, but the entire surrounding old town part with the excavations of the Bastion Cleve, which was lovingly restored, is worth seeing.

Due to a train cancellation, we spontaneously visited Magdeburg and decided to take a tour of the Hundertwasser house "The Green Citadel of Magdeburg" (15€ per person). The tour was interesting and we had special insights and views. 👍🏻😀 Although Hundertwasser would have liked it if it had rained, we were lucky and it stayed dry. 😉
Afterwards we ate …

Magdeburg was able to inspire with its numerous light installations. The Christmas market was also very varied. Komoot must have lost the GPS signal in the Hundertwasser complex and added a detour upwards. The route was fairly flat. I have rarely come across so much art in such a small space. Magdeburg convinced and inspired us. We were actually planning …
