Great view from the boardwalk on the rocky outcrop of the Brandis-Waalweg on the Niederlana parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

From this point on the Brandis irrigation channel, a sunny path that runs along an ancient watercourse used to irrigate the fields, you have a splendid view towards Lana, the crops and the Adige valley. At least in part, the water of the Brandis irrigation channel has now been piped and flows invisible to the eye.

Significance, Brandis Castle was the ancestral seat of the noble family of the Counts of Brandis, who probably built it around 1200 and still own it today.

The total walking time for this landscape art project is approximately 2.5 hours. The start is in Niederlana and then leads on the Brandis-Waal (7 projects) to Oberlana in the Gaulschlucht. From there the country promenade takes you to the Fehlau biotope near the industrial zone of Lana (Gaulschlucht and country promenade: 26 projects). The way back is on the same route.
33 artists were invited to take part in the “South Tyrolean Sculpture Hiking Trail” project. They zeroed in on a specific location on the path between Lana and the nearest communities and dealt with it.

The Waalweg is also always kept in good condition. This year I was very surprised that one of the bridges is completely new, then there is a new stone guard - they really do everything here.

Brandis Waalweg

Highlight • Trail

"The leisurely Waalweg walk crosses the foothills of the Ortler Alps on its scenic route between Oberlana and Niederlana.

From the first days of spring until late autumn, the Waalwege, as the paths along the old irrigation canals are called, offer wonderful views of the mountains and the Etschtal, but also exciting insights into a diverse cultural landscape. The ancient Waalwege are among the most atmospheric walking paths in South Tyrol. The Brandis Waalweg runs gently through vineyards, apple orchards and chestnut groves along the low mountain range. The path branches off to the left from the Gampenstraße in Oberlana and leads via Lanegg Monastery and the St. Margarethen Church to the waterfall in the Brandis Gorge in Niederlana. It offers wonderful views of the Tschögglberg as well as Lana and the Merano valley basin. An ideal walking path to reach the parish church of Lana with the famous Schnatterpeck altar."

September 23, 2022,Brandiswaalweg am Fels – Brandisgaul - Wasserfall Runde von Lana🚶🏼‍♀️🚶‍♀️
After we had to wait 1 hour for a bus to Lana this morning because the bus stop wasn't quite right 😅, we walked the comfortable, very beautiful Brandis-Waalweg. The highlight was of course the waterfall. On the way back we had to reschedule something because our planned route was blocked due to a broken wooden bridge. But safety comes …

Today it's forecast to rain continuously. So no mountain tour, but stay in the valley. But you can also go on a journey of discovery there, like on this tour with
- a skull in the church wall 💀
- a wall grave whose artist may have used mind-expanding substances 😵‍💫
- a fire salamander 🦎
and the Brandis waterfall …

On a humid day, this was exactly the right decision: shady paths without steep inclines and a cooling waterfall at the end.

The return journey partly follows the same Waalweg (Waal path), and only in the very last section on Kappuzinerstraße does one finally see the water in its narrow channel. You can hear the water gurgling every now and …

Paid parking (€1.50/hour). A wonderful little hike along a Waal, which unfortunately no longer exists.
The trail ends at a beautiful waterfall called Brandisgaul.
This path is also ideal for families with children (also with prams), at the waterfall you can play and have a picnic!
Way back as way.

..... all waterfalls in the mountains are running !!! Should be enough now.

Today I'm taking a rest day. My legs need to recover a bit from the many heights of the last few tours. Tomorrow is another day when the highlight of my bike tours here in South Tyrol is coming up.
A short hike on the Waalweg is just the thing to relax my legs. It is a very beautiful path, …

The Brandiswaalweg near Lana is one of the most beautiful and at the same time most relaxed walking paths in South Tyrol. This simple hike, almost level, leads you above Lana through vineyards and apple orchards to the Brandis waterfall.
