The St. Georg fountain is actually a war memorial, but does not look like it. Only when you look closely at the inscriptions you get on it. Built in 1930 and renovated in 1996.

After fierce controversies between the bishop and the citizens in the 12th and 13th centuries, Speyer became a Free Imperial City in 1294, and the right to mint coins was transferred to the patriciate. They built the House of the Minters, which also served as the official residence of the city council.

After Speyer's destruction in 1689, the imposing Baroque building was erected, which served as a trading center until the 19th century and later as the seat of various government agencies.

In addition to retail stores, the Old Mint now houses the city's treasury and property management offices.

In front of the Old Mint stands the St. George's Fountain, which was erected in 1930 in honor of the fallen of the First World War. It depicts St. George posing over the slain dragon. The inscriptions here are interesting: "Germany must live, even if we must die," "I had a comrade, you won't find a better one," and "German women, German loyalty." These phrases are reminiscent of Nazi propaganda, so the city of Speyer has installed a plaque stating that these inscriptions reflect the spirit of the time.

The fountain is often ignored because the view of the cathedral dominates. Nevertheless, you should linger briefly and take a closer look.
