The tuff quarry we can see in the distance is formed from a volcanic rock consisting mainly of solidified volcanic ash. It develops when ash, pumice, and small fragments of volcanic rock are ejected from the air during a volcanic eruption and compact over time into a solid, porous rock. Tuff was also used in the construction of Bürresheim Castle.
