    Hiking

The Speelmansrei is part of the first Bruges city wall and was dug together with the Smedenrei, the Augustijnenrei and the Gouden-Handrei in 1127-1128. Possibly the water and perhaps part of the bed of the, admittedly unsightly, brook the Lane could be used. The Ezel or Sint-Jacobspoort stood near the Ezelbrug. In 1270, the Speelmansrei, along with the other inland canals, was deepened to allow navigation. In the 19th century, architect Oscar De Breuck formulated the proposal to fill the Speelmansrei and transform it into a park. However, it never came to a performance.
