City palace from the 15th century. The flow of tourists misses the wow effect.

“Plus est en vous” or “There is more to you”. You have probably heard this slogan before. It was the life motto of Louis of Bruges, the man who gave this city palace its splendor.

In the GruuthuseMuseum you will find majestic tapestries, colorful stained glass windows, elegant wooden sculptures, historical lace, Burgundian manuscripts and Chinese porcelain. Each of the objects tells a unique Bruges story. The eye-catcher is the authentic prayer chapel from the late 15th century, which creates the connection between the palace and the Church of Our Lady, with a view of the church's Gothic choir.

From the balcony you have a unique view of the most beautiful places in Bruges, such as one of the most photographed bridges and the Church of Our Lady. There is more to us.

It was 1425 when John IV of Gruuthuse began building a mansion on the Dijver Canal. The Gruuthuse family earned their money with grut (a type of herbal mixture). In the Middle Ages, grut was a component of beer. Everyone drank it - as a result, the family had a lot of money and thus a lot of influence in Burgundian Bruges.

Even after Grut was no longer used, the family was allowed to levy taxes on beer. This is why the family collected valuable works of art, tapestries and historical documents over several centuries. The city palace has been a museum since 1888. The last extensive restoration took place in recent years - I think it was worth it!
