It is believed that the statue first stood on the bridge over the Hammerbach and was moved to the crossroads in 1842. After 1950 the statue was destroyed (for whatever reason) and the base disappeared into the ground and was not found again until 1995. The statue, which was re-erected in 1996, was stolen 5 years later and then the base stood there on its own for 14 years.
