The history of the Ruinenberg dates back to 1748. Until then, the area in Potsdam served as a hunting ground for partridges and pheasants for the Prussian kings. Frederick the Great wanted a large fountain with a high water jet below the vineyard terraces of Sanssouci Palace. For this elaborate project, a circular water basin was built on the Ruinenberg in Sanssouci Park.
