"...Kaiserswerth was formerly a towing station with horse changing. Elector Carl Theodor had set up the station in 1775. As is well known, horses (and people!) pulled the ships upstream on long lines until motor shipping made this hard work unnecessary around the middle of the 19th century . So the "Towpath" continues from Kaiserswerth to Wittlaer. The beautiful half-timbered building "Haus Werth" was the home of the Wittlaer towing station. The barn and shed are no longer preserved. ..."

The listed house, located in a water protection and landscape protection area, was sold to a private individual by the Duisburger Stadtwerke in 2015. Since then it has been more or less uncultivated...

When we visited in January 2024, the house apparently didn't make a bad impression in terms of structure. However, it still seemed somehow deserted, a kind of “Lost Place deluxe”.
