Large castle complex with good picnic facilities (several benches and tables). Located beautifully in the countryside with hardly any “noise of civilization”.

Imposing castle ruins with two doors and a spacious interior. Several benches invite you to take a break.

The ViertÀlergebiet achieved great economic importance very early due to viticulture and its location.

To protect this profitable enclave, Stahleck Castle was built in the 12th century. It was followed by the castles FĂŒrstenberg and Stahlberg in the early 13th century.

Dendrochronological investigations from 2005 yielded data in the period from 1158 to 1168 for the construction of the entire complex.

The complex consists of a rectangular donjon (main tower) on the highest rock elevation and a half tower on the northeast side. There is also the curtain wall with the round keep and the north-west entrance.

During the Thirty Years War the castle was taken several times by the warring parties. During these fighting, Stahlberg was obviously severely damaged, because in the Bacharach Oberamtsbeschreibung from 1678 it says that "the old dilapidated house Stalberg is located on the mountain by Thal Steeg, of which there are still several towers and the walls around them".

The Palatinate War of Succession, during which most of the castles in the Electoral Palatinate were destroyed in 1689, could no longer do much to her.
