Since the middle of the 12th century, the main square has been the city's lifeline; Fairs and markets were held here. The Second World War left visible traces, as a number of post-war buildings close the gaps left by the bombs between the historic facades. In 1988 the decision was made to declare the square a pedestrian zone.
