In 1886 the previous building (Capuchin church and monastery, 1629-1633) was handed over to the Franciscans. In 1888 the monastery was replaced with a new building and in 1892 the Capuchin church was also demolished.

On February 5, 1945, the church was badly damaged by three bombs and was rebuilt between 1946 and 1952.

Today's church is a neo-Gothic, three-aisled pillar basilica with cross vaults, transept and choir.
