The tree cross was planted on November 16 and 17, 1990 with 140 trees on the former German-German border as a "starting sculpture" for an avenue connecting west and east between Kassel and Eisenach. The tree cross consists of an avenue of ash trees on the former border strip, which crosses an avenue of lime trees along the federal highway that connects Thuringia with Hesse. Between the three rows of ash trees is the border fence, one of the longest original parts in Germany. Source: Wikipedia

The first 140 trees were on the 16th/17th. Set into the ground in November 1990: a three-row ash tree avenue on the former death strip on both sides of the border fence and a linden tree avenue along the B7. The border fence is part of this living monument. The then disarmament minister, Rainer Eppelmann, quickly gave us permission to maintain the border fence in response to a letter. Today it is probably the longest originally preserved piece in all of Germany.
