This state-of-the-art climate protection facility is located directly at the mouth of the Mølleå river into the Aabenraa Fjord. It was built to protect the low-lying city center from devastating floods and storm surges.
With the help of so-called Archimedean screws (often also called screw pumps), water is pumped here during high water levels. They are among the oldest pumping and lifting technologies in the world. They are named after the famous Greek inventor Archimedes, who described this principle as early as antiquity. At the Pumpe-Slusen Aabenraa, they serve as state-of-the-art, gigantic water pumps for flood protection.

On Søndre Havnevej 2, between the mouth of the Mølleåen and the beginning of the Aabenraa Fjord, you will find the pumping lock, which was inaugurated in 2024.
