Between Søndergade [Süderstraße] and Sønderport (Südertor), travelers left the city in a southerly direction via a primitive path along the beach, which was inundated during high tide.
From 1769 the city took over the route and expanded it, at the same time land for boatmen and craftsmen were designated.
Sønderport 1 was built in 1772 by the skipper Jacob Schvennesen. The restored building "Schvennesens Stiftelse" (Schvennesens Foundation) is one of the numerous examples in Aabenraa that wealthy seafarers bequeathed their houses for charitable purposes in favor of poor seamen.kunstiaabenraa.dk/media/4102144/tysk_marittimbyvandring-i-a-benra-_finalweb.pdf
