The Indian fountain by Erwin Barth was melted down in 1942 by the Nazis. Today, the reconstruction is back in its original place. Unfortunately, the garden is no longer Indian garden but simply rose garden.

Lions' heads spouting water have been decorating the exotic Indian fountain in the middle of the rose garden at Engelbecken in Berlin-Kreuzberg since 1995. Parts of the well were found during excavations in the former Luisenstadt Canal in 1993. They belonged to a well system that stood here before the Second World War and was later filled in in the border area between East and West Berlin and was forgotten.

The Berlin artist Gerald Matzner rebuilt the fountain, which consists of five ring-shaped floors and two basins, based on a historical model. The figure at the top of the fountain is reminiscent of a temple dancer, and below her water gushes out of seemingly shapes such as lions' heads and seated female figures.

With the “angel basin” and its fountains, the fountain forms a closed overall picture of a restored green area. The residents and tradespeople played a decisive role in this, and they made a financial commitment to create the planning conditions. The entire facility was completed in summer 2004.
